Redox active organo silica based on phenothiazines

Subject Area Inorganic Molecular Chemistry - Synthesis and Characterisation
Organic Molecular Chemistry - Synthesis and Characterisation
Term from 2015 to 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 277076309

The redox properties phenothiazines can easily be modulated, which makes them ideal candidates for developing novel functional electronic materials. The aim of this project is the synthesis and spectroscopic Characterization of phenothiazines bearing reactive group for grafting them onto porous materials. To realize this, we will use so-called periodically structured mesoporous organo silica (PMO), which are accessible by the template directed condensation of silsesquioxanes of the type (RO)3Si-XSi(OR)3. Hereby X can be a phenothiazinylene, too. Additionally the electrostatic tethering of cationic phenothiazines onto the pore surfaces of anionically functionalized PMOs will be investigated. The photo- and electrochemical properties of the free phenothiazines and of the organic/inorganic hybridmaterials which will be the products of the grafting process will be investigated in detail as well as of their interaction with electron acceptors being present in the pores.
