Project Details
Experimental and theoretical investigation of fluid dynamics and separation behaviour of sandwich packings
Subject Area
Chemical and Thermal Process Engineering
Term
since 2015
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 277604458
The main objective of the proposed renewal project is the finalization of the comprehensive model for the description of columns with sandwich packings using the rate-based modelling approach. Key aspects of the project are the experimental determination of regime-specific dispersion coefficients, liquid phase residence times and liquid-side mass transfer coefficients as well as their implementation in the model. Additionally, a correct determination of the flooding points based on a phenomenological description of the flooding as well as an upgrade of correlations for the prediction of hydrodynamic parameters to account for variable fluid properties will be addressed. The required experimental data will be obtained via ultrafast X-ray tomography. For an overall assessment of the performance of sandwich packings in comparison with conventional packing internals, both chemical absorption processes and distillation processes will be analysed with the finalized model.
