Emotion and Affect within the Context of Authoritarian Transformations in Egypt and Turkey (C01)
Subject Area
Political Science
Term
from 2015 to 2023
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 258523721
The project analyses the affective and emotional dynamics of (re)emerging authoritarian rule in Egypt and Turkey. We ask how ruling elites appropriate the protests 2011/13 and re-read the transformative Midān Moments for the legitimation of their power. We start from the assumption that this struggle about the political heritage of the protests has material, symbolic and emotional-affective dimensions. We focus on how the ruling elites have turned the societal spirit of optimism of the squares into polarization and hate. Empirically, we look into interventions in the urban space, repression, nationalistic discourses and the discourse about “the war on terror”.
