In order to increase the service life and performance of cutting, today, multiple different approaches are pursued. One highly promising approach is the use of diamond-like carbon coatings, which reduce the friction and increase the hardness of cutting tool surfaces. However, this type of coating exhibits high residual stresses, relatively low temperature resistance. Furthermore, the properties are highly dependent on the humidity in the air. The purpose of this project is to identify the me-chanical properties of the diamond like carbon coatings under cyclic-mechanical load conditions. In this regard, microstructural mechanisms, responsible for the failure of the coatings, will be identi-fied. Subsequently, based on these findings the coatings will be individually adapted by varying the layer architecture and the doping of the coatings in order to obtain optimized diamond-like carbon coatings for the use under cyclic-mechanical load conditions. Finally the applicability of these opti-mized diamond-like carbon coatings will be verified in application tests for wood processing.
