Final Report Abstract

According to the experimental results obtained above, MPC controlled CHB with floating capacitor can compensate the higher order harmonics left by the main stage, which in this case is SHE controlled NPC, while simultaneously providing better dynamic response which conventional SHE method is not capable of. And by using floating capacitor in CHB instead of real DC source, the volume of the auxiliary circuit can be smaller and less costly. Nevertheless, the extra control task of controlling the floating capacitor voltage would be an important issue. Normally a conventional capacitor voltage PI controller combined with PLL loop to detect the active and reactive power is deployed, however with MPC, the dynamic response of the system can be faster. In order to control both tasks, harmonics compensation and voltage stabilization, the coefficient of each term in cost function should be carefully designed to acquire the best performance. In future, the prediction horizon of MPC can be increased to predict more the actions of NPC, which can further make the output voltage more stable.
