Discursive reality construction in German feature film

Final Report Abstract

The project "Making of … The interplay of actions in the production process of feature films in Germany” and the follow-up project "Discursive construction of reality in German feature films” dealt with German feature films from a communication studies perspective and critically asked what happens to a mass medium when it is subject to comprehensive public funding measures. How does the architecture of film funding influence domestic filmmaking, what does this mean for filmic discourse and, in light of this, what is the relationship between feature films and social structures in this country? In order to examine, against the background of the film funding system, how constellations of agents intertwined with social structures affect the formation of meaning in the production process of German feature films and which rules of reality construction subsequently underlie this medium, the two-part research project drew on Schimank's approach of agent-structure dynamics and discourse theory or discourse analysis in the tradition of Foucault. The study was based on 103 expert interviews with representatives of all agents considered to be principally relevant to the creation of feature films in Germany, 40 successful German feature films and over 100 additional documents. The results show, on the one hand, that German filmmaking also has a political dimension and expresses hierarchies that go far beyond economic parameters and clearly limit autonomous practice in the field. The filmic constructions of reality, on the other hand, are determined by discursive formations that remain within a narrowly defined interpretive framework with hardly any diverse perspectives, offer a high degree of conventionality and do not usually undermine prevailing knowledge structures. In contrast, only a small number of artistically successful feature films with an expectedly low level of audience interest reveals a broader spectrum of reality.
