The aim of the present proposal is the investigation of the dimerization of substituted arylacetylenes by means of experiments and quantum chemical calculations. It should be examined how substituents attached at the acetylenic carbon atoms and located in para position of the aromatic units influence the reaction barrier and the consecutive reactions. A further aspect for the kinetic studies is the comparison of the dimerization of ortho-diethynylbenzenes with the competing Bergman cyclization. Here the reactivities predicted preliminarily via quantum chemical calculations are to be verified experimentally. Moreover the dimerization, as a novel C-C coupling reaction, is to be examined with respect to its potential use as a method for preparing highly substituted cyclic and polycyclic systems.
