Bacterial metabolites influencing cross-species proteostasis (C06*)

Subject Area Biochemistry
Term from 2016 to 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 189682160

Metabolites play multiple roles in the communication and coordination of bacterial cells and in the interaction with their eukaryotic hosts. In this project, we aim to investigate effects of metabolites as modulators of cross-species proteostasis. We will employ activity-based probes to investigate the proteostasis of quinolone biosynthesis enzymes of pathogenic bacteria that are involved in species-species interactions. A competitive labeling strategy with chemical probes will allow to detect bacterial metabolites as selective inhibitors of the eukaryotic proteasome and we will develop probes to profile inhibitors of bacterial modifiers of host proteostasis. Our goal is to investigate the effects of bacterial metabolites on proteostasis and gain a better understanding of the complex interactions of bacteria within and with their human hosts.
