Investigations on the application of metal containing DLC-coatings as wear protection systems for forging dies

Within this research project a further development of DLC-coatings for the application as wear protection systems for hot forging tools is focused. It could have been proved already, that doping of DLC-coatings could increase the thermal stability significantly. Thus, the wear of tools for warm forming could be decreased by DLC-coating. Within performed preliminary investigations it was found out, that doping of DLC-coatings with metal containing components could increase the thermal stability so far that an application in hot forging processes is possible.In the proposed project different metal-containing carbon systems (a-C:H:Me-DLC) both with and without adhesive layer (eg CrN) will be deposited on nitrided test substrates. The layer properties will be characterized fundamentally and a selection of variants for subsequent testing under real conditions for hot forging will be made. Friction factors will be identified and the wear will be analyzed under different hot forging processes.In the planned hot forging experiments a fundamental analysis of the coatings will be carried out. This is necessary in order to carry out a comprehensive assessment of the possible suitability of coating systems without testing in an industrial context. For this purpose, three totally different forging processes with different forging processes load types and ring compression tests to determine friction factors are used. The dies are loaded with defined forging cycles and the resulting wear mechanisms are investigated with a fine measurement level. Based on non-destructive and destructive analyze methods, a detailed determination of the present wear mechanisms is possible.
