Improvement of the central microscopy research infrastructure Center for Advanced Imaging (CAi) at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf

Subject Area Cell Biology
Biophysics
Term from 2016 to 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 284074525

The Center for advanced imaging (CAi) at Heinrich-Heine University of Duesseldorf is a well-equipped central research infrastructure that provides state of the art imaging and microscopy and is accessible for internal and external researchers. Within this project we want to further develop this infrastructure into three directions. Research focus fluorescence imaging spectroscopy: First, we want to encourage and extend the research focus of CAi: We provide a unique technical and intellectual environment for the application of multi-parameter fluorescence image spectroscopy (MFIS) due to close cooperation with the Institute for Molecular Physical Chemistry. Within this project we will develop structures to make the application of this technique available for more internal and external research groups. We will develop a standardized workflow and protocols for MFIS experiments and we will offer additional trainings and workshops for MFIS. As we are equipped with the latest super resolution microscopy systems we will establish a second research focus for super resolution microscopy at CAi. Here we will focus on the establishment and further development of staining protocols for the different super resolution techniques by testing various fluorophores. The results will be documented within our network and published to make them available for the community. Research data management: Second, we will improve the data handling of imaging data in close cooperation with the computing center at Heinrich-Heine University, ZIM. We will develop practical guidelines for storage of research data, which can be transferred to other institutes and central research infrastructures at HHU. We will furthermore install OME Remote Objects on the central file server to provide a tool for image data handling and storage. Within the project for long-term data storage at HHU the computing center will explore the possibility to use OMERO as platform for long-term storage of imaging data. Local competence network: Within a local imaging workshop we will bring together local researchers applying advanced microscopy methods. Furthermore we want to explore the possibilities to establish an official network between the imaging facilities of our region Rhine/Ruhr area. The workshop will be organized by CAi and the head of the imaging facility of the cluster of excellence CECAD in Cologne.
