We are planning to compile and interpret datasets from ten selected ODP sites drilled in the Northwest Pacific, Equatorial Pacific, Caribbean Sea, western Equatorial Atlantic, and eastern South Atlantic to close the still existing early to late Eocene cyclostratigraphic gap . The synthesis of published records and new datasets to be acquired within this project will lead to the first complete stratigraphic framework for the early Paleogene (-66 to -35 million years ago) entirely based on orbital tuning. Connecting this new stratigraphic framework to the late Paleocene orbitally tuned time scale will provide the first absolute ages for all biostratigraphic events, magnetostratigraphic zone boundaries, and paleoclimatic events. The study is intended to base on a combined analysis of various physical properties and geochemical data sets with focus on the application of the XRF Core Scanner which has been proved as the essential tool for working on long time series at high-resolution. In addition, we want to perform stable isotope analyses for further investigating new paleoceanographic events, and to contribute to the construction of the first high resolution Pacific Ocean stable isotope curve for the Paleogene. The synthesis and construction of a robust stratigraphic framework will also provide new insights into the early Paleogene climate system and will be the prerequisite for defining future drilling sites within IODP. Finally, we want to test the accuracy of radiometric dating in the early Eocene by comparing high precision 40Ar/39Ar dates with orbitally tuned dates of ash layers.
