Subject Area

We propose to combine an existing solar wind acceleration model with a model for the coronal field and augment it with a state-of-the-art model of the FIP (first ionization potential) effect. This gives us a model that self-consistently predicts the solar wind composition of both fast and slow solar wind including its FIP fractionation. Using standard ballistic backmapping techniques to the source surface we will be able to relate these model results with solar wind composition measurements by ACE/-(Advanced Composition Explorer) and Ulysses/SWICS (Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer on ACE and Ulysses), and SOHO/CELIAS (Charge, Element, and Isotope Analysis System on SOlar Heliospheric Observatory) and draw conclusions about the correlation of the variation of FIP effect and the respective solar source regions.
