Retrospective conversion of finding aids of the Landesarchiv Baden-Württemberg, department Staatsarchiv Freiburg

Subject Area Modern and Contemporary History
Term from 2015 to 2018
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 289026096

The project intends to digitize selected finding aids for key record groups of the Landesarchiv Baden-Württemberg. The generated data will appear on various platforms such as the Landesarchiv's online information system (www.landesarchiv-bw.de/web/49610), the ArchivportalD (www.archivportal-d.de), and the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek (www.deutsche-digitalebibliothek. de). The finding aids recommended for digitization belang to the archival department Staatsarchiv Freiburg. They provide access to important and frequently requested record groups. The records refer to the fond series "Bezirks- und Landratsämter" and represent public administration on the communal and territorial level. They cover the 19th and early 20th century, but also include a small number of 181h-century documentation.During the 19 th century, public administration used to affect multiple aspects of everyday life (i. e. church construction, school, acquisition of land for railway purposes, emigration, public welfare). The record group thus offers broad information on both the objectives and the impact of state intervention and provides an insight into the coexistence and interaction of different social classes. Furthermore, the records perfectly illustrate the efforts of the Grand Duchy of Baden to harmonise heterogenous administrative traditions. For example, Pfullendorf as a former imperial city, and Waldkirch and Staufen as former Austrian possessions experienced the fundamental social and political upheavals following the transition from the Holy Roman Empire to the Grand Duchy of Baden from completely different starting points.A retrospective conversion of these finding aids will significantly facilitate the use of these important records for both scientific and private purposes. Furthermore, they complement other already retrospectively converted record groups and will thus create added value beyond the aforementioned finding aids.
