Holistic evaluation of titanium machining using cryogenic cooling (CO2)

The main objective of the project is to analyze the minimum requirements of cryogenic cooling in the milling of titanium alloy Ti6Al4V to reduce high cutting temperatures by an improved coolant supply using CO2 cooling. The tool wear will, with similar productivity compared to production with conventional emulsion or oil cooling, be slowed and reduced. Through specific CO2 snow cooling the cutting zone is cooled in a way that thermochemical wear can be excluded. Furthermore, it is required to analyze the impact of changes in the thermo-mechanical load using cryogenic cooling on the operational behavior of coated carbide tools for the machining of titanium alloy Ti6Al4V. Complementarily, ecological and economically studies concerning the useful application of cryogenic cooling are be carried out.
