Development of a large-area liquid scintillator detector based on SiPM-WOM readout

Subject Area Nuclear and Elementary Particle Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Relativity, Fields
Term since 2016
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 289921825

Building on DFG project(sign removed)(2016-2019) this follow-up proposal aims at the technical development of a novel detector type combining so-far rather disjoint elements: organic liquid scintillators to create a fully active and highly efficient detector material for charged particles, Wavelength-shifting Optical Modules that offer a large collection surface and a close-to 4 pi acceptance for the scintillation light, a SiPM array for fine-grained and highly efficient photon detection, and an on-detectorreadout card for modular in-situ digitization at Gigasample-per-second time resolution. This hybrid technique offers on one hand an economic coverage of large areas by a (veto) detector and on the hand the potential to build large-volume sampling calorimeters. The development of this new technique will be the joint effort of four research groups, each specialised in a specific aspect of the hybrid system.
