Rex Captivus. Captured Kings in High and Late Medieval Western Europe (12-16th Century)

Subject Area Medieval History
Term from 2015 to 2016
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 290343137

During the entire Middle Ages, presence is the key criterium for rule and power of kings. This project will therefore ask what happened in a realm in which their kings were not present due to captivity and what the consequences of forced absence were for the kings themselves and their ability to rule. These questions make it necessary to also analyze the political framework and power structures in the kingdoms in question. At the same time, it will be essential to identify the consequences of the captivity of kings for their realms under specific consideration of the questions posed by cultural history. The proposed project will do so in a structurally comparative manner.
