Final Report Abstract

The investigations into the early Christian burial traditions in the coemeterial building under St. Maximin outside Trier are based on the now digitized extensive excavation documentation produced between 1978 and 1995. On this basis, it is now possible to link the construction findings, including the 978 burials recorded, with the small finds. On the one hand, this provides important new insights into the relative, but also absolute chronology of the use and transformation of the building, and on the other hand, it provides information on the burial rite, the social location or origin of the deceased, as well as on the Christian concept of the afterlife and its changes during the 4th-7th centuries. 31 coin-dated and 38 scientifically dated sarcophagus burials are of great importance for the chronology of the occupation on up to three successive levels. Anthropological-palaeopathological examinations of the skeletons of 127 individuals allow conclusions to be drawn about dietary habits as well as the age composition of the burial community and its diseases. Among the archaeological material, spectacular textile finds are to be highlighted on the one hand. In addition to silk fabrics from China, purple-dyed woollen cloths and dresses interwoven with gold thread were status symbols of the Christian elite in the environment of the imperial court. On the other hand, precious jewellery furnishings from ten tombs of the 6th and 7th centuries point to highly placed noble women as bearers and have parallels in St. Denis, Frankfurt and Cologne.
