Highly energetic constructive and destructive major events (flank collapses and Plinian eruptions) and their direct (tsunamis) and long-term (magma composition, eruptive rates, stress field) impact will be reconstructed from volcaniclastic deposits drilled during ODP Leg 157 in the volcanic apron around Gran Canaria. Major issues are the long-term effects of large and sometimes synchronous events that punctuated the evolution of the volcano systems Gran Canaria and Tenerife as reflected in mass flow deposits (synignimbrite turbidites, debrites, major tephra fallout deposits) and the feedback between the two episodically coupled systems. The critical events will be analyzed in selected core intervals of the 4 drill sites, supplemented by field studies. The spatial, temporal, compositional and causal relationships will be assessed by employing a wide spectrum of methods (sedimentology, volcanology, mineralogy, geochemistry, image analysis) and analytical tools, especially high resolution 40Ar/39Ar single crystal dating and laser-ICP-MS. The system analysis will allow an overall synthesis of major volcanic mass transfer events during evolution of both systems and will materially contribute to better understand hazards especially volcanogenic tsunamis triggered by volcanic mega-events.
