The research of our group is focused on materials science and applications of atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) materials including organic monolayers, carbon nanomembranes, graphene, related 2D sheets and their van der Waals heterostructures. The materials science aspects include growth of these materials with tailored properties from molecular precursors via self-assembly, electron irradiation and temperature induced modification, chemical functionalization; characterization of the growth mechanisms, structural and electronic properties down to the atomic scale. Based on this complementary analysis we implement the engineered materials in functional devices including field-effect devices, nanofilters and bioactive nanomembranes. To enable this research, application of complementary in situ surface science/nanostructure analytic techniques such as XPS, UPS, AFM, STM, KPFM, LEED in combination with preparative techniques such as PVD of organic compounds and metals, ion sputtering and electron irradiation at variable temperatures is absolutely necessary. Therefore, we apply in this proposal for a turnkey UHV Multiprobe (MP)-System in which these techniques are integrated. The MP-System will be the major research instrumentation of our newly established group of "Applied Physical Chemistry & Molecular Nanotechnology" at the FSU Jena. Moreover it will provide a qualitatively new state-of-the-art possibility for materials science research for other groups at the FSU Jena working on physics and chemistry of nanomaterials including thin layers, nanowires and nanoparticles.
