Project Details
The Bronze Age in North Central Europe: Scales of transformation (D03)
Subject Area
Prehistory and World Archaeology
Term
from 2016 to 2024
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 290391021
Project D3 focuses on transitional archaeological periods – the Early to Middle and Middle to Late Bronze Age – and how these general societal transformations played out in the specific social and material culture spheres (ritual, settlement, trade/exchange) and what their specific triggers were (e.g. human mobility). In Phase 2, the geographic region will be enlarged and extend from the Jutland Peninsula to Kuyavia, Poland where both environmental and archaeological archives will be investigated. The focus will be on the much-discussed 1600/1500 BC and 1300/1200 BC events and whether they represented instances of social crises and collapse, or socio-environmental transformations.
