Mixing processes in the stratosphere from fine to global scales with a fast high precision QCL spectrometer for N2O and CO on HALO
Final Report Abstract
Within this project the new UAMQS instrument was adopted and integrated to the HALO payload. With the new extremely precise tracer data effect of mixing based on the tracer measurements of N2O and CO during with could be investigated on different scales. 1) It could be shown that ECMWF operational analysis data indicate cross tropopause mixing in regions of high static stability due to strong shear of the horizontal wind. 2) This result was the basis for the flight planning of the WISE missions using the high resolution measurements of N2O and CO to proof the existence of this mechanism and that mixing in regions of enhanced static stability occurs. 3) It could be shown that mixing from the tropics and the monsoon region contributed to the LMS composition above 355 K. 4) It could be shown, that this transport pathway occurs on time scales of less than six months in accordance with the low observed CO, but high N2O. 5) The data could be used to set up a climatology of the lower stratospheric transit time distribution and age fractions in the northern hemisphere showing a strong seasonal cycle with short transit times and young ages in northern summer and autumn, but long transit times and high mean ages in northern winter and spring.
