Individual atomic impurities in a quantum gas form a paradigm of quantum physics. This project aims at experimentally realizing and theoretically modelling and controlling the decoherence dynamics of individual impurities in a Bose-Einstein condensate. We will particularly reconstruct the spectral function of the bath and engineer it via tailoring of the bath. Furthermore, we will consider an impurity in a spin-full bath to study the competition between decoherence and thermalization in a dissipative system. Finally, we will study the transition to a non-Markov bath, retaining memory of the past. These aims will be complemented by external periodic drive of the interaction strength to obtain nonequilibrium control of this paradigmatic model.
