Ribosomal peptide secondary metabolites from fungi

Subject Area Biological and Biomimetic Chemistry
Term from 2016 to 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 317347381

Ribosomally synthesised and posttranslationally modified peptides display various interesting bioactivities. Therefore the investigation and the understanding of their biosynthesis is of particular importance, lastly also for the modification of structures aiming at an engineering of bioactivities and physiological functions. The goal of this project is the characterization of the biosynthesis of fungal secondary metabolites by enzymatic reactions (in vitro) and by heterologous expression in a host organism (in vivo). Currently there are only two representatives of fungal ribosomally synthesized peptides known: Ustiloxin and the amanitins/phalloidins. Remarkably, the enzymatics is not satisfyingly understood and required intensive research efforts.
