Adverse environmental conditions induce acclimation responses, which are communicated through chloroplasts to adjust nuclear gene expression. Following the concept of plastid-derived retrograde signaling, ferrochelatase 1 (FC1) and its catalyzed product heme are proposed as appropriate components of tetrapyrrole-derived retrograde signaling. It is aimed to explore the role of these components in signal transduction during stress acclimation. The search for FC1-interaction partners including heme-transporters is intended to identify further components and to substantiate the proof of heme-mediated retrograde signaling.
