In view of millions of victims and a totalization of war violence, the First World War gave rise to a new conception of the hero. Taking the examples of Paul von Hindenburg in Germany and Philippe Pétain in France, the project will study in comparison the relationship between heroization in the war, the translation of the reputation capital earned in the war to political legitimation after 1918 and after 1940, and the relationship between heroization of the self and the other.
