We investigate two novel methods for the detection of magnetic particle tagged living cells in biomaterial scaffolds. In magnetic particle mapping (MPM), superparamagnetic nanoparticles are excited by a magnetic AC field, and higher harmonics of the excitation frequency are detected by magnetoelectric sensors in resonance. MPM avoids large magnetic field gradients and high AC frequencies. Magnetic susceptibility particle mapping (MSPM) instead employs a motion-modulated DC field. It magnetizes the magnetic particles and provides a bias field for a ΔE-effect sensor, which records the resulting low frequency magnetic field. Now we plan to extend our approach from 2D to 3D and improve sensitivities as well as spatial resolutions.
