Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
The interest in neutron-induced reactions is manifold. Their relevance reaches from medical applications like cancer therapy over technical application like the durability of nuclear power plant components to the question of the origin of the elements in the universe. Various scenarios contribute to the chemical evolution of the universe. A great number of nuclear reaction rates must be known to understand the nucleosynthesis. Neutron-induced reactions are mainly responsible for the formation of elements heavier than iron. This project focuses on reactions with charged particles in the exit channel. For their measurement protons, a particles or fission products with ranges in the order of 100 µm have to be detected. Despite the great interest, only a few of those reactions have been measured with high accuracy. In the scope of the NICE project, after extensive Monte-Carlo simulations, a new detector for measuring neutron-induced reactions with α particles in the exit channel was designed and built. Subsequently, first test measurements were conducted in order to study the detectors behaviour with different sources for background events and with α sources. Furthermore, the neutron capture cross-section of 209Bi was measured at 25 meV and 25 keV via activation technique.
