The application is part of a major strategic effort of LMU to improve its infrastructure for human MR imaging. With a growing research community, scanner capacity has become a major bottleneck for research . The requirement for a dedicated research scanner has repeatedly been recognized by international review boards. Contributing to this development has been a growing interest of LMU investigators to develop and optimize MRl-based biomarkers for early detection, differential diagnosis and therapeutic management of neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions. This is paralleled by a growing interest in mechanistic studies heavily supported by third party fund ing. The planned 3 Tesla research scanner will be installed in the new Center for Strake & Dementia Research building and run as an interdisciplinary platform with a core facility team as well as trained/key users. Allocation of scanning time will be managed by a users council. Projects will be distributed across five working groups: vascular imaging, neurodegeneration, vestibular imaging, neuroinflammation, and method development. Most of the projects rely on fast echo planar imaging (EPI) acquisition methods, e.g. DTI and functional imaging (BOLD, ASL, etc.). Hence, these projects require a scanner in the 3 Tesla connectome performance class with best-in-class signal processing, gradient system and coil configuration.
