Magnetic and dielectric studies on the room temperature magnet SrRu2O6 and its doped variants

Subject Area Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
Term from 2017 to 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 323612566

The recently discovered antiferromagnet SrRu2O6 is a new example of a 4d-transition metal oxide with quasi-2D structure and long range magnetic order. Its unusually high magnetic ordering temperature of about 560 K makes it a promising model system for studying the interplay of spin and charge in a correlated electron system with high spin-orbit coupling. The project team will synthesize this material in pure and doped form and study its magnetic and dielectric properties. The project partners ask essentially for travel support which will allow linking the complementary activities at both sides. In particular, the partners will utilize both conventional and microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesis for producing the materials. In addition to pure SrRu2O6, A-site and B-site doping in the AB2O6 structure will be performed, with B for example being the 3d V5+ or the 5d Ir5+ ions and A being, e.g., Ca2+, Ba2+, Mg2+, Zn2+. All materials will be thoroughly characterized by x-ray diffraction, chemical analysis, and magnetic studies. In order to understand the interplay of spin, charge, and structure, the Indian team will apply dielectric spectroscopy and nonlinear dielectric and magnetic susceptibility measurements. A first step towards devices will be done by liquid exfoliation. The German team will add information on the static and dynamic magnetic properties by using high-frequency Electron-Spin-Resonance-Spectroscopy and Muon-Spin-Rotation studies. The project will hence yield a comprehensive understanding of a new layered 4d material with potential relevance for application.
