Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

Seit dem Beginn des DFG-Centrums für Funktionelle Nanostrukturen (CFN) im Juli 2001 war sein Name Programm und Vision zugleich: Die Nanowissenschaften müssen in vielen Bereichen zunächst in Nanotechnologien überführt werden – ein Prozess, der bislang nur in einzelnen wenn auch wichtigen Fällen wie der Halbleiterelektronik umgesetzt worden ist – bevor sie ihr ganzes Potenzial als Schlüsseltechnologie des 21. Jahrhunderts erreichen können. Das CFN hat an den ersten kritischen Schritten von der Grundlagenwissenschaft zu Anwendungen mitgewirkt. Im Fokus lagen hierbei optische (2001-2014), elektronische (2001-2014), biologische (2005-2013) Funktionen sowie Energiekonversion und -speicherung (2009-2013). Herausragende Beispiele für Forschungsergebnisse des CFN sind die erstmalige Umsetzung von Negativ-Index Metamaterialien im Sichtbaren, die Durchbrechung der Beugungsbegrenzung in der Laserlithografie, die Einführung von „Photonic Wire Bonds“, die erstmalige skalierbare Trennung von metallischen und halbleitenden Kohlenstoff-Nanoröhrchen und die Entwicklung maßgeschneiderter komplexer dreidimensionaler Template für das biologische Zellwachstum. Im Zeitraum 2001-2014 haben 48 junge Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler Angebote für Professuren erhalten und fast 500 Dissertationen wurden abgeschlossen. 2006 hat das CFN am KIT die „Karlsruhe School of Optics & Photonics (KSOP)“ initiiert, die seitdem ein koordiniertes, interdisziplinäres, die Promotion begleitendes Ausbildungsprogramm anbietet. Auf dieser Basis ist das CFN heute zu einem international renommierten Zentrum für Nanowissenschaften geworden. Über die Sichtbarkeit in der wissenschaftlichen Community und der breiten Öffentlichkeit hinaus ist es dem CFN auch gelungen, innovative wissenschaftliche Konzepte in Anwendungen und marktfähige Produkte zu überführen. So sind z.B. vier Start-Up Firmen aus dem CFN entstanden. Der gemeinsam genutzte Reinraum im dezidierten CFN-Gebäude wurde Anfang 2009 bezugsfertig. Mit dem Auslaufen des CFN wurde das „CFN Nanostructure Service Laboratory“ durch das KIT verstetigt und bildet nun die Basis für künftige koordinierte Drittmittelprojekte am KIT, die eine Infrastruktur zur Nanofabrikation benötigen. Die Mitglieder und Forschungsergebnisse des CFN haben schließlich die Helmholtz-Programme „Science and Technology of Nanosystems (STN)“ und „BioInterfaces in Technology and Medicine (BIFTM)“ am KIT für den Förderzeitraum 2015-2019 maßgeblich geformt.
