Investigation of novel oxyfluoride compounds of the late transition metals by matrix-isolation spectroscopy

Subject Area Inorganic Molecular Chemistry - Synthesis and Characterisation
Term from 2016 to 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 330656784

The project aims at the investigation of so far unknown oxyfluorides of the late transition metals. Early transition metal oxyfluorides are well known for the Sc- till Fe-groups. However oxyfluoride species are so far unknown for the Co- till Cu-groups. So far the only oxyfluoride species without any doubt of the late transition metal is the OHgF which was characterized by matrix-isolation spectroscopy. In this research project we like to investigate this terra incognita to extend our knowledge of transition metal oxyfluoride compounds. The compounds in question will be characterized by matrix-isolation spectroscopy, which offers a variety of experimental spectroscopic tools and will be complemented by state-of-the-art quantum-chemical calculations. Beyond this the nature of the chemical bonding situation is of special interest as it was shown by us for the OHgF species. That is why we aim in the investigation of novel oxyfluoride compounds of iridium, platinum and gold. Especially the matrix-isolation spectroscopy is the method of choice for such investigations as bimolecular reactions can be prevented and even fragile compounds can be stabilized under such cryogenic conditions.
