3D Reflectometric Material Characterization using Co-located MIMO Radar (M04)

Subject Area Communication Technology and Networks, High-Frequency Technology and Photonic Systems, Signal Processing and Machine Learning for Information Technology
Term since 2017
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 287022738

Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) MIMO Radar systems are a promising approach to mobile material characterization, ranging, and imaging, since very large bandwidths (>50 GHz) can be achieved by compact and mobile electronic transceivers. Up to now, we could show that accurate calibration can enable FMCW transceivers to accurately measure the relative permittivity and losses of dielectric materials. Furthermore, we demonstrated range estimation down to single-digit microns. In the 3rd phase, we are going to enable material imaging in large dynamic scenarios. Therefore, we will investigate on advanced SAR kernels suitable for material imaging as well as highly accurate MIMO radar-based localization methods. Furthermore, we will continue to investigate on calibration methods to account for systematic errors in MIMO radar, which may occur due to hardware impairments or near-field effects, when considering large apertures or arrays.
