Efficient On-Chip Antennas for THz Systems (C05)

Subject Area Electronic Semiconductors, Components and Circuits, Integrated Systems, Sensor Technology, Theoretical Electrical Engineering
Term since 2017
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 287022738

C05 explores novel approaches for on-chip antennas to maximize antenna gain and bandwidth - properties that are essential for the mobile, broadband THz transceivers within MARIE. The efficiency of single radiators is systematically maximized with the help of an equivalent circuit-based synthesis. Due to their inherent frequency selectivity, the resonant single radiators are combined to form a broadband overall antenna. In addition to the most modern silicon technologies, III/V semiconductor systems for the highest desired operating frequencies are also considered. In C05 tailor-made antennas for active components (resonant tunnel diode, photo diode, bipolar transistors) enable maximized performance. Furthermore, it is investigated how emerging technologies, like silicon micromachining and ceramic 3D printing, can be utilized to achieve highly efficient, purely dielectric antennas with a large aperture.
