Final Report Abstract

In this project small molecules of the Group 14 element tin were investigated that contain a tin–tin bond. Based on pyridyl-functionalized ligands, tin(II) precursors were synthesized and their subsequent reactions were also examined for the possible construction of higher tin oligomers. A method for the preparation of branched tris(stannyl)stannates could be established and extended to germanium- and lead-centered derivatives. However, synthetic strategies for small target molecules, such as dianionic distannides, did not lead to the desired success. Access to monoanionic stannylstannates also proved to be very difficult. After optimized synthesis, the reaction behavior was explored in a variety of examples. Another rare mixed-valent tin compound was achieved and fully characterized. Further reaction studies with transition metal compounds reveal new perspectives.
