HiL-Lung - Hardware-in-the-Loop simulation environment for artificial lungsThis project aims at modelling the interaction between new implantable lung devices and the circulation and aims to establish a physical test environment for such new devices. Based on previous experiences in the field, we propose to use object-oriented modelling which seems is especially suitable to model the dynamics of gas exchange and the hydraulic properties of the circulation in real time. A physical demonstrator shall be set up offering physical connectors to any device under test (dut). This hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test stand will provide a proper hydraulic interface (similar pressures, pulsatile perfusion, etc.) and will hence allow an automatic characterization of any newly developed artificial lung, either biological, technical or hybrid in nature, provided that the physical connections fit. Next to water, blood is intended to be used in order to have a realistic environment and to allow investigation of gas exchange and hemocompatibility issues. If done right, the implant under test will not notice that the HIL environment is any different from a living organism. Next to using simulated flow and pressure profiles, the HIL test stand also allows to repetitively use measured data obtained in earlier animal trials. As this can be done repetitively without the need for additional animal trials, this HIL test stand will most likely reduce the total number of necessary animal trials. Finally, the HIL test stand also allows to investigate questions regarding safety, robustness, automation and control as well as monitoring in an early stage.
