Integral Field Spectroscopy of low-z Luminous Infrared Galaxies

Subject Area Astrophysics and Astronomy
Term from 2006 to 2007
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 34793517

Recent spitzer cosmological surveys have demostrated that the majority of IR-selected galaxies at z < 1 are in the LIRG class (LIR = L [9-lOOO^m] = 1011 - 1012 LG) and that LIRGs make a significant contribution to the IR galaxy population at 1 < z < 2. This run is part of a biggest Project where a representative sample of low-z (z < 0.07) LIRGs are going to be observed with the PMAS integral field spectrograph. It is intended to cover the different morphologies (isolated galaxies, interacting galaxies and mergers) and a range of IR luminosities. This is the first systematic study of the properties fo a sample of low-z LIRGs, In particular, we will study the 2D properties of the stellar populations and the kinematics of the systems. This study will be the key to understand the Population of IR-selected high-z galaxies.
