Discrete and phase field models of dislocations and their macroscopic limits

Subject Area Mathematics
Term from 2007 to 2015
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 28259266

Plastic behaviour is ultimately related to the motion (and its inhibition) of individual dislocations. While there has been considerable progress in the computational modeling of the motion of individual dislocations and the local interaction of different dislocations, the large number of dislocations in a given specimens requires a multiscale approach to understand the mesoscopic and macroscopic effects of dislocations. The objective of this project is first to understand the passage from atomistic theories to mesoscopic theories and second to analyze effects of dislocation patterning in mesoscopic theories and compare the results with experimental observations (the latter being carried out in project P7).
