German high school students, which were first interviewed at the age of 16, have been re-interviewed at 20, 43, 56 and 66 about their life course and their worldviews. The topic of the re-interviews was identity formation during youth, identity keeping during mid-life, and again identity formation in old age – under the new conditions of retirement and an “empty nest”. Just as the former waves, the fourth one has been funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research association) (DFG-Az. BI 683/3-1 und ME 577/18-1) for 36 months from 01/03/2018 to 28/2/2021. Due to circumstances not attributable to the team, which are presented in detail in section 1.1.4 below, the project work has been considerably delayed. As a comprehensive data set for the – in total – five panel surveys could not yet be built up, the substantive questions outlined in the original proposal could not yet be dealt with. In the Renewal Proposal the project directors can do the planned analyses as outlined in the original proposal, and the two project assistants can finish their dissertations about “old age self-views” and “old age identity”.
