Fatty acid biomarkers provide an integrated measure of dietary exposure and allow detecting alterations in fatty acid metabolism. Fatty acid profiles of erythrocyte membranes were related to risk of type 2 diabetes and plasma levels of CRP and adiponectin in the EPIC-Potsdam study. These findings and analyses on genetic variants in FADS1-FADS2 highlight a potential role of desaturases involved in fatty acid metabolism in the pathogenesis of diabetes. We aim to elucidate potential pathways underlying the association between fatty acid profiles and diabetes risk by evaluating prediabetic markers as well as metabolomic profiles using effect decomposition methodology and path analysis. In addition, we will identify food patterns related to fatty acid profiles and determine whether these patterns are related to diabetes risk. We furthermore aim to evaluate whether fatty acid markers are informative extensions to the German Diabetes Risk Score, a diabetes prediction model developed in EPIC-Potsdam.
