This project is a contribution to the ICDP funded drilling project at Lake El´gygytgyn, a lake located in a 3.6 Ma old meteorite impact crater in north-eastern Siberia. The initiative aims drilling of the impact rocks and overlying lake sediment succession to reconstruct the impact event and the Late-Pliocene and Quaternary climatic and environmental history. As part of a pre-site survey for the drilling campaign, sediment samples were recovered in 2003. While the first months of this DFG-project mainly focused on the lake history during the last 340 ka, the second year will approach a detailed record of the Holocene and the Last Glacial Maximum. Additionally, a newly recognised problem, dealing with the formation of cold stage sediments, has to be solved. The understanding of these sedimentation processes is crucial for further investigations of older lake sediments that will be obtained by the ICDP-drilling Project.
