Targeted Manipulation of Residual Stresses during Cold Forging

Subject Area Primary Shaping and Reshaping Technology, Additive Manufacturing
Mechanical Properties of Metallic Materials and their Microstructural Origins
Term since 2017
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 374584412

The overall objective of the project is the fundamental scientific analysis and utilization of the influence of residual stresses introduced by cold forming on the stressability of components made of austenitic steels. In the two previous phases, the research objective was to understand the relationships between the forming process, residual stresses, phase transformations and component properties on various austenitic steels. Likewise, residual stress propagation along process chains was analyzed and the influence of various process and metrological disturbances was investigated. Underlying mechanisms could be explained and described analytically. Results of numerical simulations of the processes show good agreement with experimental residual stress analyses. In the 3rd phase, the investigated correlations are used to implement methods for the reliable application of the developed strategies. With the help of the systematic use of the technologies developed in the previous project phases, a tailored residual stress design is to be realized in a process-safe manner. For this purpose, in the first step, optimized target residual stress distributions are determined with analytical and numerical calculations on the basis of stress analyses for different stress cases. The cold forming strategy derived from this, with the design procedures already developed, aims to set the determined local target residual stress distributions in the forming process. As a result, model-based determined relationships between the external stresses as input parameters and the resulting process parameters as output parameters are available. The models take into account, on the one hand, the residual stress developments in process chains that have been extensively investigated by experimental and numerical methods and, on the other hand, the improvements in component properties that can be achieved by residual stresses. This is also intended to create the conditions for practical application and further industrial development of the developed strategy.
