Strongly interacting matter at finite baryon density behaves in so far theoretically intractable ways. Standard lattice QCD simulation techniques cannot be applied to this regime because of the sign problem. We use effective theories based on the strong coupling and hopping expansions of QCD to circumvent this issue and study the cold and dense regions of the phase diagram. We also investigate the role of entanglement measures in characterizing QCD phases of matter and develop lattice techniques to measure them. Further, on the way towards fully alleviating the sign problem in various regions of the QCD parameter space, we develop algorithms to simulate QCD theories using quantum computers.
