Project Details
Cell-based, immune-protected therapy for patients with adrenal insufficiency (A05)
Subject Area
Endocrinology, Diabetology, Metabolism
Term
since 2017
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 314061271
The aim of this project is to develop a curative therapy for adrenal insufficiency using xenogeneic cell replacement. To this end, functional adrenal spheroids are generated from porcine cells and embedded in an immune-isolating macroencapsulation system. Successful restoration of regulated hormone production has already been demonstrated in mouse models. In the third funding period, the focus will be on evaluating the safety, scalability, and therapeutic efficacy of this approach in a large animal model (pig). The long-term goal is the clinical translation of this cell-based curative therapy for patients with adrenal insufficiency.
