Subject Area Inorganic Molecular Chemistry - Synthesis and Characterisation
Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
Physical Chemistry of Solids and Surfaces, Material Characterisation
Physical Chemistry of Molecules, Liquids and Interfaces, Biophysical Chemistry
Term from 2017 to 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 386027243

In this collaborative project, crystalline phases based on anion-radicals of endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) will be prepared and thoroughly characterized by structure determination methods, spectroscopy, powder and single-crystal magnetometry, as well as quantum-chemical calculations. Structural studies of the crystals formed from EMF anion radicals will clarify the mechanisms of the electron transfer exhibited by EMFs in solution. Synthesis of the anionic solids of EMFs targeted in this project will lead to a new class of materials with unprecedented electronic and magnetic properties. Intermolecular interactions of fullerene-based anion-radicals in such crystals will lead to a variety of magnetic phenomena, as it was already demonstrated for empty fullerenes. At the same time, electronic charging magnetic lanthanide-based EMFs will modify the intra- and intermolecular magnetic coupling between lanthanide ions and reinforce single molecule magnetism exhibited by such EMFs.
