This project aims to understand the protein assembly process of the inhibitory postsynapse in a bottom-up approach, using purified proteins and model membranes. Although the key proteins involved were discovered several decades ago, the major findings and hypotheses are mainly based on cell experiments, and the molecular principles behind this process are still poorly understood. Our results will reveal the nature of the still controversially discussed gephyrin structures (e.g. lattices, liquid-liquid phase separation).
