Project Details
Reconstructing and predicting the near-Earth radiation environment utilising dimension reduction (B06)
Subject Area
Mathematics
Term
since 2017
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 318763901
Energetic particles in near-Earth space pose a significant risk to Earth-orbiting satellites and humans in space. During the previous funding periods, we focused on developing dataassimilative tools separately for the most energetic electrons, known as radiation belts, and less energetic particles typically referred to as the “ring current”. In the next funding period, we will develop data assimilative tools for all energies from cold to ultra-relativistic, treating them as a single system. The new approaches and newly developed methods for dimensionality reduction and data assimilation will be tested on space physics data.
