This project has so far considered variability deriving from two sources, the motor system controlling articulatory movements and language-specific syllabic organization. Properties of the latter were quantified in aggregate measures over speakers grouped into languages, and its language-specificity was manifested in the distinct ways these groups express syllabic organization. However, in vocal tracts, any given sequence of phonemes is realized phonetically with variable spatiotemporal organization from one instance of that sequence to another. It is this variability that becomes a focal point of our proposed Phase 3 work.
