Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

In total 17 lakes and lake basins were studied for its hydrological and sedimentological inventory during the field campaign to West Greenland in summer 2007. Although the target area in the Nordre Str0mfjord region could not been reached due to logistic reasons, the geodetic and hydrological measurements of lake basins in the vicinity of Sisimiut will distinctly contribute to a better understanding of the deglaciation history and subsequent changes in relative sea level and climate history. First results indicate that the highstand of the relative sea level was with a maximum altitude of more than 132 m a.s.l. significantly higher than assumed hitherto. Only very few climate reconstructions from West Greenland exist so far. Several of the recovered sedimentary records contain a deglaciation facies at the base and thus will contribute to a better understanding of the complete postglacial climatic history of the region. The ongoing and future sedimentological investigations on the material recovered will be carried out mainly by student employees and within the scope of Diploma theses, and in close collboration with Ole Bennike from the GEUS in Copenhagen and Anthony Long from the University of Durham.
