Magnetic Materials containing Polycyanometallates

Subject Area Inorganic Molecular Chemistry - Synthesis and Characterisation
Term Funded in 2017
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 389058463

Research on single-molecule magnets is important for the development of future data-storage technologies. At the interface between chemistry and physics it is necessary to understand the relationship between structure and properties of the materials. The synthesis is best accomplished by using a building-block approach (using different metals and ligands). The main aim of this project is to prepare clusters containing polycyanometallates and cationic dipyridylketon-metal complexes. Polycyanometallates have received much attention in magnetochemistry for two reasons: they have high structural variability and external stimuli (e.g. light) can be used to modify the electronic/spin state. The dipyridylketon-ligand is a well-established building block for cluster synthesis with interesting magnetic properties due to the variety of possible coordination modes.Nevertheless, both promising building blocks haven’t been combined so far in the literature. While most publications on polycyanometallate chemistry are based on the principle of combining mononuclear polycyanometallates with mononuclear cationic metal complexes, this proposal goes further than that, since polynuclear cationic clusters are involved. By variation of different parameters (coordination geometry, oxidation state, reaction stochiometry) a plethora of compounds can be synthesized and their properties be investigated.
