Production of polycrystalline superalloy membranes by cross-linking of incoherent g´-precipitates

Subject Area Metallurgical, Thermal and Thermomechanical Treatment of Materials
Mechanical Properties of Metallic Materials and their Microstructural Origins
Term from 2017 to 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 389412490

The objective of this research proposal is to investigate a new process for the production of superalloy membranes. It is based on the coarsening of incoherent rather than coherent g´-precipitates, leading to a bi-continuous g/g´-microstructure. This new method has not only the potential to simplify the production process but also to raise the strength of the membrane material. However, the correlation between processing parameters, microstructure evolution and membrane properties are not yet understood. Therefore, it is the purpose of the research proposal to clarify this interrelation. Only then is it possible to make full use of the new production process and fabricate membranes with optimal properties. Particular attention will be placed on the processing step required to produce a bi-continuous g/g´-microstructure via growth of incoherent g´-particles as well as the mechanical properties of the resulting membranes.
